Why Buy a Pre-Owned TAG Heuer Instead of New?
Why Buy a Pre-Owned TAG Heuer Instead of New?
TAG Heuer is one of the most recognizable names in Swiss watches. From the motorsport heritage of the Carrera and Monaco to the rugged Aquaracer and accessible Formula 1, TAG Heuer has built watches that appeal to both first-time luxury-watch buyers and experienced collectors.
I personally own TAG Heuer watches and have bought and sold quite a few of them over the years. And while I like what TAG Heuer is producing today, I think there is an especially compelling argument for buying one pre-owned.
The reason is simple:
Your money can buy a lot more TAG Heuer on the pre-owned market.
The First Owner Often Takes the Biggest Depreciation
Like many luxury products, most TAG Heuer watches don't necessarily retain their original retail price once they enter the secondary market.
That's not necessarily a negative about the watch. In fact, for the next owner, it can be a major advantage.
When you buy a well-selected pre-owned TAG Heuer, someone else has often absorbed a significant portion of the initial depreciation. Instead of paying today's retail price, you may be able to purchase a lightly worn example for considerably less.
That can also mean moving into a higher-level watch for the same budget.
Instead of asking:
"What new TAG Heuer can I buy for my budget?"
I think it's worth asking:
"What TAG Heuer could I own for this amount if I'm willing to buy pre-owned?"
Those can produce two very different answers.
You May Get More Watch for Your Money
This is where TAG Heuer gets particularly interesting.
The pre-owned market contains decades of Carreras, Aquaracers, Formula 1s, Monacos, Links and Grand Carreras in countless configurations.
Some were expensive watches when new.
But once depreciation has taken place, a buyer can potentially get an automatic Swiss luxury watch with features such as:
- Sapphire crystal
- Swiss automatic movement
- High-quality stainless-steel case and bracelet
- Strong water resistance
- Chronograph or GMT complications
- Ceramic or aluminum bezels
- Excellent finishing
- One of the most recognizable names in Swiss watchmaking
At a fraction of its original retail price, that's an entirely different value proposition.
A Great Example: The TAG Heuer Aquaracer
The Aquaracer is a good illustration of why I like pre-owned TAG Heuer.
A quality pre-owned Aquaracer can give you nearly everything you'd want in a serious everyday sports watch: Swiss automatic movement, excellent water resistance, sapphire crystal, a substantial bracelet and a design that works equally well with shorts and a polo or business attire.
For example, we've offered an Aquaracer WAY211A Calibre 5 at C.S. Crown & Bezel.
It's a 41mm automatic with a black dial, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, rotating dive bezel and 300 meters of water resistance.
Our example is also in excellent condition and includes the original box, papers and booklet.
That's a serious Swiss dive watch—and exactly the kind of watch that demonstrates what the pre-owned TAG Heuer market can offer.
You Aren't Limited to What's in This Year's Catalog
This may be my favorite reason to shop pre-owned.
Watch companies constantly change their collections.
Cases get larger or smaller. Dials change. Bezels change. Movements change. Certain color combinations disappear entirely.
And sometimes the discontinued watch is the one you actually prefer.
TAG Heuer has produced an enormous variety of watches over the years. The Carrera family alone offers everything from simple automatic watches to chronographs, heritage-inspired pieces and complicated models.
The same is true of the Aquaracer, Formula 1 and many of TAG's discontinued collections.
Shopping pre-owned means you're not choosing from one year's catalog.
You're choosing from decades of TAG Heuer.
For a collector, that's much more interesting.
Some Discontinued TAGs Have Tremendous Character
This is another area where I think TAG Heuer is underappreciated.
There are discontinued Carreras, Grand Carreras, limited-edition Formula 1 models and older Aquaracers that look completely different from the watches in today's display case.
Some are tied to motorsports. Some use dial designs TAG no longer produces. Others come from a particular period in the company's history.
They aren't necessarily watches everyone else is wearing—and that's part of the appeal.
One of the things I enjoy most about collecting watches is finding something a little different.
A great watch doesn't have to be the newest reference.
Condition Matters More Than Age
Of course, "pre-owned" doesn't automatically mean "good value."
I'd much rather own an excellent example of a ten-year-old watch than a poorly maintained example that's only three years old.
When I'm evaluating a pre-owned TAG Heuer, I'm looking at things such as:
- Overall case and bracelet condition
- Whether the watch has been excessively polished
- Dial and hand condition
- Crystal and bezel condition
- Bracelet wear and missing links
- Movement operation and timekeeping
- Evidence of moisture or corrosion
- Service history, when available
- Original box, warranty card, manuals and other documentation
I also personally place a premium on complete watches.
Box and papers aren't necessary to enjoy a watch, but all else being equal, I prefer a clean watch with its original accessories and documentation. It makes the watch more complete as a collectible and can make it easier to sell or trade later.
What About Buying New?
There are absolutely good reasons to buy a TAG Heuer new.
You receive a brand-new watch, manufacturer's warranty, the authorized-dealer or boutique experience, and access to the newest models and movements.
For some buyers, that's worth paying more.
And if TAG Heuer releases a particular watch you absolutely love, buying it new may make perfect sense.
But if your primary goals are value, selection and getting the most watch possible for your money, I think you owe it to yourself to look at the pre-owned market before making the decision.
TAG Heuer Is Especially Good for Someone Building a Collection
Not everyone wants one expensive watch that they wear every day.
I'm one of those people.
I enjoy having different watches for different occasions—and TAG Heuer works extremely well in that kind of collection.
A Carrera can fill the dressier sports-watch role. An Aquaracer can be your everyday or water watch. A Formula 1 brings the motorsport connection. A chronograph or discontinued special edition can add something completely different.
Buying carefully on the pre-owned market can make building that kind of collection much more attainable.
Buy the Watch—Not Just the Discount
There's one final point that's important.
Don't buy a pre-owned TAG Heuer simply because it's cheap.
Buy the right TAG Heuer at the right price.
I'd rather pay a little more for an excellent example with good provenance, full bracelet, original components and box and papers than chase the cheapest watch I can find online.
The goal isn't simply to spend less.
The goal is to get more watch for your money.
And that's where I think pre-owned TAG Heuer really shines.
